Important Planning Notes

Route: This itinerary uses the seven-day Machame Route, selected for its additional acclimatization opportunities.

Altitude and safety: Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude mountain. Trek with a licensed, experienced mountain team, follow their safety decisions, and descend if altitude illness is suspected. Summit success cannot be guaranteed.
-
Day 8 flight: The transfer to Zanzibar depends on the actual trekking finish time, flight availability, and your recovery. Allow a flexible schedule and consider an extra night in Moshi if needed.
-
Accommodation: Mountain camps are basic camping facilities; accommodation in Moshi and Zanzibar can be selected to suit your preferred comfort level.
-
Migration: If you want to add a Serengeti safari, additional days would be needed to include it comfortably alongside this trek and Zanzibar holiday.
Detailed Itinerary: 12-Day Kilimanjaro Trek and Zanzibar Holiday
Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you will meet your transfer representative and travel to your hotel in Moshi. Depending on your arrival time, relax at the hotel, enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro, and prepare for the adventure ahead. Attend a trek briefing with your mountain team, review the equipment checklist, and receive guidance on the climb. The remainder of the day is reserved for rest, hydration, and preparation before the expedition begins.
Overnight: Moshi hotel
Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, transfer to Machame Gate for registration and the start of your trek. Enter Kilimanjaro National Park and hike through dense montane rainforest, where moss-covered trees, birds, and rich vegetation create a beautiful natural setting. The trail gradually climbs through the forest before reaching Machame Camp. Your guides will monitor your progress and encourage a steady pace as you adjust to the mountain environment.
Trekking: approximately 5–7 hours | Elevation: 1,800 m to 3,000 m
Overnight: Machame Camp
Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the rainforest behind as the trail ascends onto open moorland, revealing wider views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. Cross rocky ridges and scenic upland terrain before reaching the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape known for its expansive views. Arrive at Shira Camp, where you can relax, enjoy a warm meal, and appreciate the mountain scenery. Your guide will assess how you are adapting to the increasing altitude.
Trekking: approximately 4–6 hours | Elevation: 3,000 m to 3,850 m
Overnight: Shira Camp
Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Continue across the high-altitude landscape toward Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation at approximately 4,600 metres. After a break, descend toward Barranco Camp through rugged terrain and impressive mountain scenery. This higher-then-lower trekking profile supports acclimatization, although it cannot eliminate altitude-related risks. The descent also introduces you to the spectacular Barranco Valley, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and distinctive giant groundsels.
Trekking: approximately 6–8 hours | Highest point: about 4,600 m
Overnight: Barranco Camp, approximately 3,960 m
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day by ascending the famous Barranco Wall with assistance and guidance from your mountain team. The route involves rocky sections and careful foot placement but rewards trekkers with magnificent views of the mountain slopes. Continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. The shorter trekking day allows time to rest, eat well, and prepare for the higher camps ahead.
Trekking: approximately 4–5 hours | Elevation: 3,960 m to 4,035 m
Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Trek across increasingly dry and rocky terrain toward Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. As the landscape becomes more barren, views of the surrounding peaks highlight the dramatic alpine environment. On arrival, have an early meal, organize your summit equipment, and rest as much as possible. Your guides will provide a briefing about the planned ascent and assess whether conditions and your health support continuing.
Trekking: approximately 3–5 hours | Elevation: 4,035 m to 4,673 m
Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 7: Summit Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp
Begin the summit attempt according to your guide’s schedule, ascending slowly through the high-altitude terrain toward Stella Point and, if conditions permit, Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Reaching the summit offers extraordinary views and a memorable sense of achievement. After celebrating and taking photographs when conditions allow, descend carefully toward Barafu Camp and continue to Mweka Camp. This is an exceptionally demanding day, and reaching the summit is never guaranteed; the guide may adjust or end the ascent for safety.
Overnight: Mweka Camp, approximately 3,100 m
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Zanzibar
After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificate if eligible. Meet your transfer team and travel to the airport for your flight to Zanzibar, subject to flight schedules and your condition after the trek. On arrival, transfer to your beach resort and enjoy a relaxing evening by the Indian Ocean.
Overnight: Zanzibar beach resort
Day 9: Stone Town Cultural Tour
Discover the historic character of Stone Town on a guided walking tour through its winding streets, traditional buildings, lively markets, and distinctive carved wooden doors. Learn about Zanzibar’s Swahili heritage and the influences of African, Arab, Indian, and European cultures. Depending on opening times and your interests, visit local landmarks and browse shops selling crafts, textiles, and spices. Return to your accommodation for a relaxing evening.
Overnight: Zanzibar hotel or beach resort
Day 10: Zanzibar Spice Farm and Island Exploration
Experience Zanzibar’s spice-growing traditions with a guided visit to a local farm. Discover how cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, and other aromatic plants are cultivated and used in local cuisine. Learn about the island’s history as a major spice-trading destination and sample seasonal produce where available. Depending on the tour arrangements, continue to a nearby village or coastal viewpoint before returning to your resort.
Overnight: Zanzibar beach resort
Day 11: Zanzibar Beach Leisure and Optional Ocean Activities
Spend the day relaxing on Zanzibar’s beautiful coastline, enjoying the white sand, warm tropical weather, and clear Indian Ocean waters. You may choose an optional guided snorkeling excursion, a boat trip, or a traditional dhow cruise, subject to sea conditions and availability. Alternatively, enjoy the resort facilities, explore nearby coastal villages, or simply take time to recover from your Kilimanjaro expedition. This is the ideal day to unwind before departure.
Overnight: Zanzibar beach resort
Day 12: Departure from Zanzibar
Enjoy breakfast at your resort and spend any remaining free time relaxing or taking a final walk along the beach, depending on your flight schedule.
