Day 1: Arrival in Arusha, Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your safari representative welcomes you and arranges a private transfer to your luxury lodge in Arusha. Settle into the peaceful gardens, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch or afternoon tea, and take time to recover from international travel. Your safari specialist reviews the journey, confirms your dietary preferences, and explains the wildlife areas and regional flight connections ahead. If arrival time allows, enjoy a relaxed walk around the lodge or a short introduction to Arusha. Dinner is served at the lodge, with an early night recommended before your first day on safari.
Day 2: Tarangire National Park — Elephants and Ancient Baobabs
After breakfast, travel by private 4×4 to Tarangire National Park, a landscape of ancient baobabs, golden grassland and seasonal wetlands. Your first game drive begins as soon as you enter the park, with your expert guide scanning for elephant herds, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and predators moving through the bush. Stop for a scenic picnic or return to your lodge for lunch, depending on wildlife activity and the day’s pace. Later, continue exploring the Tarangire River corridor before arriving at your luxury tented camp or lodge. Enjoy sunset views, a freshly prepared dinner and the sounds of the African night.
Day 3: Full-Day Tarangire Wildlife Safari
Spend a full day discovering Tarangire’s varied habitats and wildlife rhythms. In the dry season, animals often gather around dependable water sources, creating rewarding opportunities to observe elephants and other plains game; the park’s swamps and woodland also support abundant birdlife. Your guide tailors the route to recent sightings, light and your interests, allowing time for photography and quiet observation rather than rushing between sightings. Pause for a picnic lunch beneath the shade of a tree or at a designated site, then continue on an afternoon drive. Return to camp for a relaxed evening, dinner and stories beneath the stars.
Day 4: Scenic Journey into the Serengeti
Leave Tarangire after breakfast and travel through the dramatic Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the Serengeti. The drive is part of the adventure: highland scenery gradually gives way to open plains, rocky outcrops and acacia-dotted savannah. Your guide makes appropriate stops for wildlife viewing and photographs, with a packed lunch arranged to keep the journey comfortable. As you enter the Serengeti ecosystem, keep watch for giraffes, gazelles, ostriches and, with luck, larger predators. Arrive at your carefully selected safari lodge or tented camp in time to settle in before dinner. The exact camp location is chosen around the season and preferred safari style.
Day 5: Serengeti National Park — Big Cat Country
Wake to the open landscapes of the Serengeti and set out on a private game drive with your specialist guide. Depending on your camp’s location and current sightings, explore central plains, rocky kopjes and riverine areas where lions may rest, leopards can shelter in trees, and cheetahs scan the grasslands. Elephants, buffalo, hyenas and many antelope species add to the day’s discoveries. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush or return to camp between drives for a slower, more indulgent rhythm. The Serengeti is wildlife-rich throughout the year, while the exact location of migratory herds changes with season and rainfall.
Day 6: The Great Wildebeest Migration Experience
Today is dedicated to following the Great Migration where the herds are most likely to be found during your travel dates. Your guide uses recent local observations to choose the most promising areas rather than relying on a fixed prediction: herds may move between the southern plains, western corridor and northern Serengeti as the seasons change. Along the way, look for wildebeest and zebra herds, gazelles and the predators that follow them. A scenic bush breakfast or picnic can be arranged where permitted. Return to camp after an unhurried afternoon drive, with time to relax, review photographs and enjoy dinner in the wilderness.
Day 7: Exclusive Serengeti Game Drives and Optional Balloon Safari
Enjoy another memorable Serengeti safari day, shaped around your interests and what the landscape is revealing. Choose an early departure for cooler temperatures and active wildlife, then explore a different sector of the ecosystem with your guide. You may encounter elephants crossing the plains, lion prides near kopjes, or smaller details such as dung beetles, tracks and colorful birds that make the bush come alive. For an added celebration, a sunrise hot-air-balloon safari can be requested at extra cost and is subject to weather and availability. Spend the afternoon on another drive or relaxing at camp before a final Serengeti dinner.
Day 8: Scenic Flight from the Serengeti to Arusha
Rise early for a final Serengeti game drive, taking advantage of the soft morning light and cooler hours. After breakfast, transfer to the appropriate airstrip for a scheduled or charter flight to the Arusha area, based on the final route and flight availability. The flight offers a striking aerial perspective over Tanzania’s broad plains and helps avoid a long return road journey. On arrival, your driver takes you to a comfortable luxury lodge for the night. This overnight stop creates a practical buffer between the safari circuit and the Rwanda leg, reducing the risk of a rushed international connection. Dinner and overnight in Arusha.
Day 9: Fly to Rwanda and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, transfer to the appropriate airport for your regional journey to Kigali, with routing and any connection confirmed when flights are booked. On arrival in Rwanda, meet your local representative and travel by private vehicle through the country’s lush, terraced hills toward the Volcanoes National Park area. The drive reveals Rwanda’s celebrated green landscapes and rural communities, with a brief stop along the way if timing permits. Check in to your luxury forest lodge, where views of the Virunga volcanoes create a dramatic change from Tanzania’s open savannah. Your guide briefs you on the next day’s gorilla trek, including fitness, clothing and park protocols.
Day 10: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today brings the unforgettable highlight of mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters for a briefing before rangers assign your trek and lead you into the forest. Trek duration and terrain vary because gorilla families move naturally through their habitat; your guide sets a sensible pace with breaks as needed. When the gorillas are located, follow ranger instructions and enjoy the permitted viewing time quietly and respectfully. Return to the lodge after the trek for a well-earned meal and time to rest. The trek permit must be secured in advance and is subject to official availability.
Day 11: Golden Monkey Tracking and Rwanda Cultural Experiences
Enjoy a second full day in the Volcanoes region, with golden monkey tracking as the recommended activity, subject to permit availability and your interests. Led by experienced park guides, follow forest trails to observe these lively primates in their natural habitat, while learning about the high-altitude bamboo forest and wider Virunga ecosystem. Alternatively, take a gentler day with a guided community or cultural visit, a conservation-focused experience, or time to unwind at the lodge with views of the volcanoes. After your activity, return for lunch or afternoon tea and a final celebratory dinner. Your safari specialist can tailor this day to your pace and preferences.
Day 12: Return to Kigali and Departure
Enjoy breakfast overlooking the volcanic landscape before checking out and beginning the private road transfer back to Kigali. Depending on your flight time, your driver may arrange a short stop for a meal, shopping for local crafts or a final view across Rwanda’s rolling hills. Allow a generous buffer for the drive and airport formalities, especially for international departures. At Kigali International Airport, your representative assists with the final handover and your East African journey concludes. You leave with two very different safari memories: Tanzania’s vast plains and iconic wildlife, and Rwanda’s misty mountain forests and close encounter with endangered mountain gorillas.

Best and worst time to visit
Best overall: June–September
This is generally the strongest all-round period for combining Tanzania’s dry-season game viewing with Rwanda’s more manageable gorilla-trekking trails. Tarangire wildlife viewing can be excellent around water sources, while the Serengeti offers different migration opportunities according to the herds’ location. June through September is also one of Rwanda’s principal dry periods. Book lodges, flights and gorilla permits early for peak-season travel.
Excellent alternative: January–February
Consider these months if you particularly want to experience the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti. They also fall within a generally favorable trekking window in Rwanda. However, the safari should be routed around migration conditions and current lodge availability rather than assuming the herds will be in a particular location.
Most challenging: March–May
The long rains can bring muddy roads, slippery forest trails, heavier showers and more complicated travel logistics. Some safari camps may close seasonally, and outdoor activities may require greater flexibility. Nevertheless, this is not a season without value: travelers may enjoy lush scenery, excellent birdlife and fewer visitors, sometimes with lower accommodation rates. Gorilla trekking remains possible, but you should be comfortable with wet conditions.
Our recommendation: Choose June to September for the most balanced luxury safari experience, or January to February if Serengeti calving season is your priority. The Great Migration follows seasonal rainfall, so its exact location cannot be guaranteed; Serengeti Safari Experts should tailor camp locations and routing to your travel dates.
