Tanzania Northern Safari: Tarangire + Ngorongoro + Serengeti

Tanzania Northern Safari: Tarangire + Ngorongoro + Serengeti

This classic northern circuit brings together three very different landscapes in one itinerary. Tarangire is known for its elephant herds and baobab-studded terrain, Ngorongoro Crater offers dense wildlife viewing within a caldera, and the Serengeti provides the sweeping plains that define the safari imagination. The route gives first-time visitors a well-rounded introduction to Tanzania, and it rewards repeat travelers who want to see how each ecosystem differs.

The itinerary can be adjusted for length, accommodation style and travel season, from lodge-based comfort to tented camps. [CONFIRM: standard duration, road versus domestic flight transfers, and inclusions.] Tell us your travel dates and interests, and we will design the version of the northern circuit that suits you.

Tanzania Northern Safari: Tarangire + Ngorongoro + Serengeti

At a glance: 6 days | Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti | Best for first-time visitors wanting the classic northern circuit | Year-round, with seasonal differences in each park | [CONFIRM: price, dates, accommodation, transfers]

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha

Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and takes you to Arusha, the safari hub of northern Tanzania. You have the rest of the day to relax. In the evening, a briefing explains the route, the three ecosystems you will visit and what each one is known for. Your guide also covers the basics of game drives, such as staying quiet, keeping hands inside the vehicle and how to use binoculars effectively. First-time guests often appreciate the chance to ask questions before the adventure begins. Dinner is at your lodge. [CONFIRM: lodge and transfer details.]

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

After breakfast you drive to Tarangire, a journey of roughly three to four hours. The park is known for its elephants, ancient baobab trees and the river that draws wildlife in the dry season. You spend the day on game drives with a picnic lunch, looking for elephants, giraffes, zebra, buffalo, impala and many bird species. Lions and leopards live in the park but are never guaranteed. Tarangire feels different from the Serengeti, with more trees and rolling terrain. You overnight at a lodge or camp near the park. [CONFIRM: accommodation and whether lunch is at a picnic site or lodge.]

Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro

You take a morning game drive in Tarangire, then leave the park and travel through the Rift Valley and the Karatu highlands to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The scenery changes from dry bush to green hills, and on a clear day the first view from the crater rim is spectacular, with the caldera spread out far below. You reach your lodge in the afternoon, with time to relax, enjoy the view and prepare for an early start. The rim is cool, especially at night, so pack warm clothes. [CONFIRM: lodge and optional Lake Manyara stop.]

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

At dawn you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the caldera floor. Within a few hours you can see lions, hyenas, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos and many birds, and, with luck and distance, black rhino. After a picnic lunch you climb out of the crater and drive across the highlands, stopping at Olduvai Gorge if time permits, before reaching the Serengeti plains. You arrive at your Serengeti camp in the late afternoon, in time for an evening drive or a quiet sundowner. [CONFIRM: road or flight transfer and the camp location.]

Day 5: Full day in the Serengeti

Today belongs to the Serengeti, one of the world’s most famous wildlife areas. You spend the day on game drives, with your guide choosing routes based on the season and recent sightings, and may find lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, hippos and, depending on timing, large herds. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for activity. Between drives you rest at camp or have a bush lunch. In the evening, your guide may talk about the park’s ecology and conservation challenges over dinner. [CONFIRM: any optional activities.]

Day 6: Return to Arusha

You enjoy a final morning game drive, then transfer to a Serengeti airstrip for the flight to Arusha, or begin the long drive back if you have chosen a road itinerary. In Arusha, you are met and taken to Kilimanjaro International Airport, or to a hotel if you are continuing your stay. Many guests add a few days in Zanzibar or, for the adventurous, a Kilimanjaro trek at a later date. [CONFIRM: flight details, return timing and extension options.]
