Epic 7-Day Serengeti Ndutu Calving Season Safari Experience.
Ndutu Calving Season Safari Package (Baby Wildebeest)
Epic 7-Day Serengeti Ndutu Calving Season Safari Experience
In the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area, wildebeest herds typically gather to calve in the early months of the year, drawing predators to the plains. Over seven days, this safari focuses on that cycle of birth, survival and pursuit, with game drives timed to the herds and the light. The scenery, from short-grass plains to the shores of Lake Ndutu, adds depth to a season that is as visually striking as it is emotionally powerful.
Timing varies from year to year with rainfall and grazing conditions, so we help you choose dates that give you the best chance of witnessing the calving period. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. [CONFIRM: recommended travel window, camp locations, and whether the itinerary includes Ngorongoro.] Request a tailored plan and we will help you align your dates with the season.
Epic 7-Day Serengeti Ndutu Calving Season Safari Experience
At a glance: 7 days | Arusha, Karatu, Ngorongoro, Ndutu and the southern Serengeti | Best for wildlife lovers who want to witness calving and predators | Typically January to March, with February often cited as peak, though timing varies | [CONFIRM: dates, price, camp locations]
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your Arusha lodge. You use the evening to rest and to meet your guide, who explains the calving season, why the southern plains are so rich in nutrients and how predators respond to the arrival of thousands of calves. You also review what to bring, including layers for cooler mornings, and discuss any photography or accessibility needs. Dinner at the lodge is followed by an early night, since the next day is a long drive. [CONFIRM: lodge and transfer details.]
Day 2: Arusha to Karatu
You drive west through the Rift Valley, passing Mto wa Mbu and the escarpment above Lake Manyara. The road climbs into the green highlands of Karatu, a farming region that serves as a gateway to Ngorongoro. A stop at a local market or coffee farm gives a taste of daily life outside the parks. You reach your lodge in the afternoon and have time to relax before dinner. This stage is more about travel and scenery than wildlife, but it sets up the days that follow. [CONFIRM: lodge and optional activities.]
Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater
An early descent into Ngorongoro Crater gives you a morning among lions, hyenas, buffalo, hippos and herds of grazers on the caldera floor. The compact setting makes it easier to see a lot in a short time, and your guide interprets behavior as you go. Crater visits have a time limit, so the day is planned carefully, with a picnic lunch by a pool. In the afternoon you ascend and either stay at the rim or continue toward the Ndutu region. [CONFIRM: whether the crater is included and where you stay.]
Day 4: Olduvai Gorge to Ndutu
You cross the highlands, stop at Olduvai Gorge if time allows and then descend onto the southern plains. The landscape opens up, with short grass, acacia woodland and the shallow, seasonal Lake Ndutu. In calving season, the herds often gather here to take advantage of nutrient-rich grass. You may see wildebeest and zebra in large numbers, with newborn calves nearby, and predators in the background. You reach camp by mid-afternoon, with time for an evening drive. Herd locations shift from week to week, so your guide uses recent information to choose where to go. [CONFIRM: camp.]
Day 5: Calving on the plains
Today focuses on the herds. At the peak of calving, many thousands of calves can be born in a single day, and a calf can stand within minutes and run soon after. Your guide takes you where the action is likely to be, which may include grassy plains and woodland edges. You may also see lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas moving in on vulnerable young. This is natural and can be hard to watch, so your guide will prepare you for what you may witness. Lunch is a bush picnic or at camp. [CONFIRM: any additional activities.]
Day 6: Ndutu predators and the Gol Kopjes region
You spend another full day around Ndutu and nearby southern plains. Depending on the herds, your guide may head to areas such as the Gol Kopjes, known for rocky outcrops that big cats use as lookouts. Mornings are often the best for predator activity, and afternoon light is excellent for photography. Birdlife around Lake Ndutu can be rich, with flamingos in some conditions. You return to camp for a quiet evening, with the sounds of the night all around. A sundowner stop is possible where rules allow.
Day 7: Departure
After a final early game drive and breakfast, you transfer to an airstrip, [CONFIRM: Ndutu or a Serengeti airstrip], for a light-aircraft flight to Arusha, or drive back if you prefer to continue the journey on the ground. In Arusha, you connect to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight, or to a hotel if you are extending your stay. Many guests choose to add a few nights on Zanzibar after the safari. [CONFIRM: flights, timings and any extension options.]
