Best Luxury Serengeti Safari and Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda.
This two-country journey pairs the open plains of the Serengeti with the bamboo forests and volcanic slopes of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, home to mountain gorillas. In Tanzania, you spend your days on guided game drives and your nights in comfortable, well-located camps or lodges. You then fly on to Kigali and travel to the Volcanoes National Park area, where a guided trek brings you into the company of a habituated gorilla family for a carefully limited time.
Gorilla treks need advance permits, a reasonable level of fitness and flexibility with weather and terrain, and permit fees and rules are set by Rwanda’s authorities and can change. Share your travel dates and the pace you prefer, and we will outline how the safari and the trek could fit together into one smooth itinerary.
Luxury Serengeti Safari and Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Experience
At a glance: 9 days | Serengeti (Tanzania), then Kigali and Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) | Best for travelers combining plains wildlife with primates | Both destinations can be visited year-round; the main Rwanda dry seasons are roughly June to September and December to February, and the Serengeti varies by herd movement | [CONFIRM: price, dates, operator for Rwanda]
Editorial note: Gorilla trekking takes place in Rwanda, Uganda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, not in Tanzania. This itinerary uses Rwanda. Confirm whether the Rwanda portion is operated directly or through a partner before wording the page.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
You arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide meets you and drives you to a comfortable lodge in Arusha. The afternoon is for rest and to adjust to the time zone. In the evening you have a briefing that covers both parts of the trip, including what to expect from a Serengeti game drive and, later, a gorilla trek. Your guide discusses fitness, clothing and permit logistics for Rwanda. Gorilla trekking can involve steep, muddy terrain, so honest conversations about fitness at this stage are valuable. Dinner is at the lodge. [CONFIRM: lodge and briefing details.]
Day 2: Fly to the Serengeti
After breakfast you transfer to Arusha Airport for a light-aircraft flight to the Serengeti, with views of the Rift Valley and the plains as you descend. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and takes you on a game drive en route to camp, where you check in and have lunch. An afternoon game drive explores the surrounding plains, woodland and river valleys. Look for lions, elephants, giraffes, hyenas and many bird species. Back at camp, you enjoy dinner and the sounds of the bush after dark. [CONFIRM: flight schedule, baggage limits and camp.]
Day 3: Serengeti game drives
Your first full day in the Serengeti begins before dawn, with a hot drink and a game drive as the light grows. Your guide follows animal tracks, listens for alarm calls and uses recent sightings to choose where to go. Common sights include lions, elephants, buffalo and giraffes, while leopards and cheetahs are possible but not guaranteed. After a late breakfast or brunch back at camp, you can rest or take a gentle walk within the camp grounds, where allowed. The afternoon drive offers another chance for sightings. [CONFIRM: whether walking is permitted at the camp.]
Day 4: Another region of the Serengeti
You spend a second full day in the Serengeti, perhaps exploring a different part of the park, where the landscape and wildlife can change noticeably. Depending on the season, you may move toward river valleys, rocky outcrops or open plains. Your guide balances ambition with comfort, so you are not driving for hours without a purpose. In the evening you enjoy a farewell dinner for the Tanzanian part of the trip. Because the next day involves several flights, you pack ahead and rest well. [CONFIRM: whether you change camps or stay at one location.]
Day 5: Serengeti to Kigali
You take an early flight from the Serengeti to Arusha or Kilimanjaro, then connect to Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. [CONFIRM: routing, since direct and one-stop services depend on current airline schedules.] On arrival you are met by your Rwandan guide and driven to your hotel. If time allows, an optional visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial offers important historical context for understanding the country. Many travelers find it moving, and it should be approached with respect. Dinner is at the hotel, and you rest before an early start. [CONFIRM: Rwanda ground handler and visa guidance.]
Day 6: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
You drive north from Kigali toward Musanze, a journey of around two to three hours through the hills of Rwanda. The landscape is terraced farmland, with volcanic peaks rising ahead. You check in at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park, where you will have time to unwind, perhaps with a short village or craft visit. In the evening, your guide reviews the gorilla trekking rules, including keeping a safe distance, not trekking when ill and following the rangers’ instructions. You get to bed early. [CONFIRM: lodge and any cultural activities.]
Day 7: Gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, you meet park rangers at the headquarters, receive a briefing and are assigned to a habituated gorilla family. Trekkers then hike through farmland, bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, sometimes for an hour or two, sometimes longer, depending on where the gorillas have moved. When you find the family, you typically spend one hour in their company. [CONFIRM: current rules.] Guests may see adults, juveniles and infants feeding or resting. After the trek, you return to your lodge for lunch and a well-earned rest. Permits are essential and must be booked in advance. [CONFIRM: permit cost and booking process.]
Day 8: A second Volcanoes National Park experience
Today offers a gentler alternative to the gorilla trek. Options may include golden monkey tracking, a hike toward the area associated with Dian Fossey’s research, a visit to a nearby lake or a community-based tourism activity. Your guide will help you choose according to your energy and interests. In the afternoon you can rest at your lodge, enjoy the views and perhaps start packing. The evening may be your last in Rwanda, so many guests enjoy a relaxed dinner and reflect on both journeys. [CONFIRM: which activities are available, permit requirements and prices.]
Day 9: Return to Kigali and departure
After breakfast you drive back to Kigali, with time for a short stop for crafts or coffee if you wish. You are taken to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight, or to a hotel if you are extending your stay. If you have a late flight, you may be able to visit a market or museum in the city. Many travelers extend the trip with time at Lake Kivu or Akagera National Park in Rwanda, or with a beach stay in Zanzibar. [CONFIRM: any extensions offered, and flight timings.]

Best time: June to September (drier Rwanda trails plus Serengeti dry season). December to February is a second good window. Permits can be limited, so reserve early.
Approach with care: March to May is Rwanda’s heavy rainy season, with slippery trails, and the Serengeti also has long rains. October to November has shorter rains in both countries. Gorillas can be trekked year-round, but wet conditions make it harder.
