Best and Worst Time to Visit Uganda for Gorilla Trekking
Uganda’s mountain gorilla parks can be visited throughout the year. However, rainfall affects trail conditions, hiking comfort, and road access, particularly in Bwindi’s mountainous rainforest. The two principal dry periods are generally the best choice for visitors seeking more manageable trekking conditions. Tourism Uganda’s seasonal guide provides additional planning information.
Best Overall: June to September
This is the main dry season and one of the most favorable times for mountain gorilla trekking. Trails are often firmer, making hikes more manageable, and lower rainfall can make outdoor activities more comfortable.
This is also a popular travel season, so gorilla permits, domestic flights, and luxury lodges should be booked well in advance. Rain remains possible in Bwindi’s rainforest, even during these relatively dry months.
Also Excellent: December to February
The shorter dry season provides another excellent opportunity for gorilla trekking. Conditions are generally more favorable for hiking than during the wetter months, and the period works well for travelers seeking a short luxury escape.
December holidays can be particularly busy, making advance reservations important. January and February are also attractive months for combining wildlife encounters with comfortable lodge stays.
Most Challenging: March to May
These months generally bring the long rainy season, with April often particularly wet. Forest trails may become muddy and slippery, and steep sections can require additional effort. Transfers on rural roads may also take longer during heavy rainfall.
Nevertheless, the forest is exceptionally green, and gorilla trekking remains possible. Visitors should bring waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and a degree of flexibility in their plans. In April and May, eligible foreign non-resident visitors may also find discounted permits, subject to current booking conditions.
October and November: Short Rains
Rainfall often increases again during October and November, although conditions vary by year and location. The rainforest remains lush and attractive, but wet trails can make trekking more demanding.
November may offer discounted permits to eligible foreign non-resident visitors under the applicable low-season arrangements. Confirm current prices and restrictions before booking, particularly if your travel dates are fixed.
Our recommendation: Choose June to September for generally easier trekking conditions, or December to February for another favorable period. Pack waterproof clothing regardless of the month because Bwindi’s rainforest climate can change quickly.
Why Choose This 3-Day Gorilla Trekking Safari?
The 3-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari (Lodge + Permits) is designed for travelers who want an extraordinary wildlife encounter in a short, well-organized journey. The combination of a confirmed gorilla permit, comfortable accommodation, and coordinated domestic flights minimizes unnecessary travel and helps maximize your time in the Bwindi region.
For Serengeti Safari Experts, this package is an attractive premium offering for couples, short-stay visitors, and wildlife enthusiasts seeking personalized service, carefully selected lodges, and responsible wildlife experiences.
Booking recommendation: Secure the gorilla permit first, then confirm your lodge, flight schedule, and private transfers around the assigned trekking sector. Ideally, arrive in Entebbe the evening before Day 1 if you are connecting from an international flight, and allow sufficient time after the return domestic flight before any international departure. This will help keep your three-day safari comfortable and practical.
